HCBA 2007 Annual Banquet
The Harris County Beekeepers Association (HCBA) Annual Banquet was held on October 23, 2007. Members came together in celebration of another great year in beekeeping. It has been a busy year for the membership—the Houston Livestock Show and the Pasadena Strawberry Festival are behind us. Events such as these not only are fun for the members, they help promote the importance of beekeeping to the general public and hopefully, generate interest in the association, especially among the younger generation.
One of our members, Harry Reichart, traveled to Australia to attend Apimondia 2007. Check out the “All About Bees” page for Harry’s report on his experience in the “Land Down Under”.
HCBA’s Youth Program is now in its 3rd year; Miss Maggey Baca was the association’s first Youth Program member—Maggey and Dad, Chris Baca, are both beekeepers now! This year HCBA sponsored Miss Jocelyn Causer of Santa Fe, Texas, in beekeeping. Jocelyn and her family have been very active in the association and we all look forward to her continued participation in the program.
Next month, November 8-10, 2007, HCBA will be hosting the Texas Beekeepers Association Annual Convention in Galveston, Texas. HCBA members, 19 in all, have worked hard in preparation for the upcoming Convention. HCBA is striving to make this year’s Convention the best yet!
Next year HCBA will celebrate its 100th year anniversary—President Don Angle is determined to “raise the bar” with respect to the Executive Committee’s (EC) commitment and leadership of the association—providing more educational opportunities for the membership, communicating more effectively, and attracting and retaining new members, including youth.
We’ve made some great strides in this effort in the last few months—the new website, www.harriscountybeekeepers.org is up and running, and we have a new newsletter, the “Honey Bee Times”. The Executive Committee will be working hard the remainder of this year and next year to re-organize and to improve the association’s value to its members!
