Article by HCBA Member, Harry Reichart
On Saturday, August 9, 2008, the Harris County Beekeepers were invited to attend the “HCBA Honey Harvest Educational Session” hosted by Bill & Pat Whittington and their son Curtis at their home in Dickinson, Texas. Thirty two (32) members, both old and new, enjoyed a day at the seminar put on by Bill and his son Curtis. Mrs. Pat Whittington graciously provided the refreshments; she prepared home made ice cream, cookies, and ice tea that went over very well with all the members in attendance. Bill is a long time member of the Harris County Beekeepers and the former Galveston County Beekeepers and is a former President of both Associations. |

2008 HONEY HARVEST EDUCATIONAL SESSION |

He operates a commercial enterprise. Due to the number in attendance, we were split up into two groups for a tour of his uncapping room and bottling plant. It was well received by all the members present as he explained the workings of the uncapping machine which dated back to the 1970’s. Bill explained about the Galveston County Health Departments visits that are necessary for his complete operation and of the important procedures that he has to follow to keep in compliance. Curtis then gave us a demonstration of the uncapping machine. The groups then went out to the bee yard where Bill opened a few hives for the group to inspect. Bill explained the inner workings of the hive, how to smoke the bees, and lifting and removing the frames so as not to damage the Queen or the Bees. The HCBA Association would like to thank Bill, Pat, and Curtis for all the time and effort they put into this educational and entertaining session. |
